- Ohio did not recognize their marriage.
- John Arthur was very sick and wanted to be recognized as a married man.

- The court ruled in their favor.
- John Arthur's Ohio death certificate listed him as married.
The Supreme Court later upheld the right of same-sex couples to marry.
